A typical Italian menu is served in six parts.

l'Antipasto which are hot an cold appetisers.

Il Primo (first course) which usually consists of a hot dish such as pasta, risotto, gnocchi, polenta and soup.

Il Secondo (second course) The main dish, usually fish or meat. Contrary to popular belief, pasta is rarely a main course in traditional Italian menu's.

Il Contorno (side dish) Usually a salad or vegetables.

Il Dolce (dessert)

Il Caffe which is coffee, often served with liqueurs.
